The Fort Macleod Mavericks will host the 2019 provincial Midget D hockey championship tournament in March.
The tournament will bring seven other teams from around the province to Fort Macleod on March 21-24.
Planning is under way by a committee that is working with the support of the Fort Macleod Minor Hockey Association.
Committee members are Jennifer Mackin, chair; Shelby Austin, vice-chair and secretary; Caitlyn Leader, treasurer; and Brenda Vandervalk, Wendy Larson, Randy Keller, Scott Martineau, Lindsey Rivet, Tim Meech and Todd Vance.
The committee has representation from all levels of Minor Hockey as all the money raised from this tournament will benefit Fort Macleod Minor Hockey Association.
The committee’s goal is to have a provincial account set up within the association that is available to future teams that qualify to attend a provincial tournament as it can sometimes involve extensive travel expenses.
This season the Fort Macleod Midget team welcomed four players from Claresholm to the Mavericks family.
The Claresholm community has provided support to the Midget team this year and is continuing with support for provincials.
Therefore, for scheduling reasons and as a thank you, four games will be played at Claresholm.
The tournament will begin Friday, March 22 with a coaches meeting and a couple of games.
The opening ceremonies will be held Friday afternoon at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre, followed by the final game of the day.
On Friday evening the committee will host a banquet for the teams and families at the Fort Macleod and District Community Hall.
Round robin play will continue on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 will have the semifinals and final game.
The committee right now is working on details throughout the weekend: raffle table, silent auction items, opening ceremonies, dinner, volunteers and much more.
If anyone is interested in donating to the tournament, whether it is items for the raffle table, silent auction items or a cash donation to help cover the cost of the tournament, contact Caitlyn Leader at
There are a variety of sponsorship level opportunities, each providing the sponsor with advertising in a magazine style tournament program and in the arena lobby during the tournament.
Many volunteers are needed to make this tournament run smoothly, so if anyone is interested in helping out contact Amanda Meech at
Some of the jobs are score clock operator, score book, raffle table, 50/50 and odd jobs throughout the weekend. The committee would welcome any volunteer help it can get.
