April 20, 1935 — Feb. 12, 2019
Jan (John) Hendrick Segboer of Fort Macleod passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at the age of 83 years.
John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 58 years, Lorraine; his children Tim (Lorraine), Ken (Linnet) and Cari-Ann (Bruce). “Poppa” will be missed by his six grandchildren, Bailey (Chris), Mykela (Richard), Hayden, Griffin, Owen, and Carson.
John was the eighth child of Abraham and Maria Segboer, born April 20, 1935 in Macleod, now known as Fort Macleod. He was raised on the family farm north of Macleod, and went to school in Granum. John was never afraid to try new things and take chances. Throughout his life he ventured into a variety of jobs and business opportunities, gaining skill and knowledge with each one.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and camping. He spent most summer weekends boating and water-skiing with friends and family at the Cardston Boat Club on St. Mary’s Reservoir.
John also loved warm destinations and they were fortunate to make a lot of great memories on trips to Hawaii and Las Vegas. In later years, he and Lorraine treasured camping trips to Whispering Pines Resort in B.C. where they enjoyed the company of family and made many new friends.
Beginning in 2005, John and Lorraine spent their winters down south, mostly in Palm Springs, California, where they became a part of a wonderful community of “snow birds.” Each fall John was always anxious to reunite with his “Cathedral Palms family” as this was definitely his happy place.
A memorial gathering was held in John’s honour on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 120 Garrison Drive (Rosewood Villa) in Fort Macleod.
Memorial donations in memory of John can be made to the Fort Macleod Handibus Society, P.O. Box 881, Fort Macleod, AB, TOL OZO or to a charity of your choice.
A special thank you to the staff at Rosewood Villa in Fort Macleod for their loving care and support.
