Empress Theatre selling take-out popcorn during pandemic

Empress Theatre managing director Margaret Ann Bianco prepares popcorn for pick-up on a recent Friday night.

The Empress Theatre might be shut down by the pandemic, but COVID-19 hasn’t broken its spirit.
The historic theatre’s staff and volunteers are selling bags of popcorn on Friday nights so residents have a treat while screening movies at home.
“It is the best popcorn in southern Alberta,” Coun. Kristi Edwards noted.
Edwards raised the Empress Theatre’s popcorn sales during the “for the good of council” portion of the April 27 meeting at the G.R. Davis Administration Building.
People can pre-order popcorn at 403-553-4404 up to noon on Thursday. Payment is by debit, credit card or e-transfer to empress@empresstheatre.ab.ca.
The prices are small, $3.50; medium, $5; large, $6; jumbo, $7; and family size, $20.
The popcorn can then be picked up between 5-7 p.m. on Friday.
The Empress Theatree has carved out a strong reputation in southern Alberta for the quality of its freshly-popped popcorn.
“Kudos to them for keeping the spirit alive,” Edwards said.
