Granum now a hamlet in MD of Willow Creek

Granum is no longer a town.

Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor last month made an order dissolving the town as of Saturday to become a hamlet in the MD of Willow Creek.

People will learn more later this month once an open house is scheduled by MD of Willow Creek council and administration.

Granum residents voted nearly 70 per cent in favour of dissolution in November.

One hundred and 88 residents voted in favour of dissolution during the vote held Wednesday and Thursday at the Granum Drop In Centre.

Sixty-six votes were cast in favour of Granum remaining a town.

It as the third time since 2000 that Granum residents have voted on dissolution

The vote followed a viability review that indicated Granum needs to spend $14.7-million on infrastructure over the next 10 years.

That included $8.29-million on roads and sidewalks and $5.2-million on waste water.

MD of Willow Creek council wrote Granum residents Thursday welcoming them to the municipality.

“As  a  council  we  are  committed  to  providing  fair  representation  and  transparent  governance  to  all  of  the  citizens  of  the  municipality,” the letter stated.

Granum residents will be represented by Division 2 Coun. John Kroetsch.

The MD of Willow Creek is sending to residents an information package regarding payment of taxes and utilities, by-law enforcement and other information.

The Granum Town Office closed immediately, which means residents now do business at the MD of Willow Creek office in Claresholm.

“MD  of  Willow  Creek  staff  will  continue  to  ensure  the  operation  and  maintenance  of  roads,  solid waste, water, waste water services, fire and emergency and by-law services,” council wrote in its letter to Granum residents.

Council also stated in the letter the MD of Willow Creek will work with Granum organizations that look after such services as parks and recreation, culture, history and education.
