RCMP urges Macleod residents to lock vehicle doors

The RCMP is reminding Fort Macleod and district residents to lock vehicles to deter thieves.

In 2019, the number of reported vehicle thefts topped 1,000 in August, the most in any single month.

The number of reported thefts from vehicles was more than 1,300, another single month high in Alberta RCMP detachments.

According to 2018 statistics, 26 per cent of stolen vehicles had the keys in them and eight per cent were left running.

The RCMP in Alberta reported August, July and October were the top three months for vehicle thefts.

August, July and September were the top three months for thefts from vehicles.

 In total, there were more than 12,200 reported thefts from a motor vehicle in 2018.

Close to 10,000 vehicles were reported stolen in 2018. Trucks were the most commonly stolen vehicle.

Steps for protecting your vehicle can be as simple as closing the windows and removing the keys when you leave.

Here are more tips for preventing thefts:

  • Lock the doors.
  • Remove valuables from vehicle including purses, shopping bags, change, electronics and sunglasses.
  • Remove the garage door opener.
  • Park your vehicle in sight or in a well-lit area.
  • Use a steering wheel lock.
  • Lock your garage.
  • Disable power to the garage door if you’re leaving for an extended period of time
