Tickets selling slowly for duck race fund-raiser

Fort Macleod Lions Club and the Royal Purple have joined forces for the second annual Duck Race fund-raiser, which offers two $1,000 prizes.

Two Fort Macleod service clubs are getting their ducks in a row for a September fund-raiser.

Fort Macleod Lions Club and the Royal Purple have joined forces for the second annual Duck Race on Sept. 26.

The Duck Race offers two $1,000 prizes for the first, and last duck to come out of a cement mixer provided by O’Sullivan Construction.

The Lions Club last year raised $4,000 after expenses with the first Duck Race held at Fort Macleod Midnight Stadium.

This year the Lions invited the Royal Purple to take part.

“We thought it would be nice to share the proceeds with another club,” Lion Griff Griffiths said.

The Royal Purple has a supply of rubber ducks, which last year the Lions borrowed from another club up north.

The sale of the 2,000 tickets has been slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented the service club members from being active in the community.

“For a couple of months we really couldn’t get around, but it’s starting to pick up,” Griffiths said.

Last year, the Lions sold 1,400 of the 2,000 available tickets to realize a profit of more than $4,000, which was put back into the community.

All the proceeds from the Duck Race will stay in Fort Macleod through projects run by the Lions Club and the Royal Purple.

“Our projects go all the way from seniors to youth,” Griffiths said. “Right now it’s not set for anything specific, but we’re getting requests almost every month from different organizations for things happening in Fort Macleod.”

The race was to take place in August but was delayed until September by the pandemic.

A location for the “race” has not yet been determined.

People from across Canada buy the tickets through Lions’ personal and professional connections.

“We would like to sell all 2,000,” Griffiths said.

Tickets are $5 apiece and are available from Diane at Hansen Family Foods, Michelle at Fort Pharmacy and Steve at Top Shelf Liquor.
