Trotter, Norma Eleanor

norma trotter

Aug. 21, 1928 — Sept. 17, 2020

Norma was born in Vancouver, B.C. on Aug. 21, 1928 to parents Otis and Viola Strong. The family (including her older brother William Donald) moved to Grande Prairie and then back to Calgary. After her mother’s passing in 1931, her father married Hazel Lorimer and together they added to the family a brother Garry, and triplets (sister Glenna and brothers Merrill and Mervin).

With the exception of her time spent in Pigeon Lake during the Great Depression, most of Norma’s childhood was spent in Calgary attending school in the Sunnyside-Hillhurst community and graduating from Western Canada high school.

During high school, Norma spent the summers as a companion and nanny to the Ralph Miller family on their homestead south of Fort Macleod. After graduation, she obtained a bookkeeping position with Park Fashion in Fort Macleod. Shortly after, Norma met and married Lawrence Trotter, settling on the Trotter family farm south of Fort Macleod where they raised their children; being a loving and devoted mother and wife. When Lawrence started Trotter Contracting, Norma also utilized her administrative and bookkeeping skills within the family business.

Norma was the reflection of all the qualities most can only aspire to achieve in one’s life. Although she never knew who would appear for any meal or a long term stay, her home was always an open door — welcoming all those entering with her sincere and genuine kindness, warm heart and loving nature, wisdom and counsel, and her generous and nurturing spirit. Most children in her community knew her affectionately as “Aunty Norm” embracing all in her adopted family. She touched the hearts of many throughout her life and will be sadly missed by each and every one of us.

Like her father, Norma was an avid gardener; spending countless hours tending her flowers and vegetables, harvesting and canning the fruits of her labour — sustaining not only her family but numerous relatives and friends.

As well as assisting her community wherever needed, Norma was an active member in the South Macleod community, United Church Ladies, Allied Arts, Fort Macleod Legion Ladies Auxiliary and let’s not forget the Sew-Sew Club.

Her inner strength and tenacity carried her through many of life’s hardships and she devoted her life in service to others. If there was ever an angel among us, it was Norma (whom we are sure God has anointed a “Special Angel in Heaven”).

Norma remained in Fort Macleod until her passing after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her children Ron (Carol) Trotter, Chris (Rory) MacLeod, Laurel Wintemute, Kathie Trotter and Jason (Tamara) Trotter; her brother Mervin Strong and sister-in-law Judy Strong; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Norma is predeceased by her husband Lawrence Trotter; mother Viola Strong (Johns/Welsh); father Otis Strong; stepmother Hazel Strong (Lorimer); infant daughter Sydney Trotter; son Craig Trotter; daughter-in-law Anna Trotter and son-in-law Larry Wintemute; brothers Donald, Garry and Merrill Strong; sisters Glenna Strong and Greta Channing (Johns); mother-in-law Grace Clarke (Trotter); fathers-in-law Jack Clarke and Irwin Trotter; brothers-in-law Allen (Barb Barlow) Trotter and Orman (Pearl) Trotter; sisters-in-law Patricia (Garry) Strong and Pauline (Mervin) Strong; and nephews Darryl Strong and Terry, Dale and Ross Trotter.

At Norma’s request, a private family gathering will be held next summer in remembrance of Norma and all of those who have previously passed.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society No. 40, 1202 Second Ave. S., Lethbridge, Alta., T1J 0E3.
