Two F.P. Walshe school students competed last week in the hairstyling portion of the Skills Canada Competition.

Ellie Orr and Lydia Nelson were among more than 300 students from across the province to participate in Skills Canada Alberta’s virtual regional competitions.

Students competed in one of eight event areas: baking, cabinet making, carpentry, culinary arts, hairstyling junior, hairstyling senior, video production, or welding.

“One of our goals as an organization is to encourage students to explore their natural interests and talents, and to become masters in their chosen field,” Skills Canada Alberta executive director Chris Browton said. “The Regional Skills Canada Competitions provide a platform for students to develop their skills and connect with peers who share similar passions.”

Ellie Orr competed Wednesday in the regional hairstyling junior competition, where she had to create a creative braiding design.

The following day, Ellie Orr and Lydia Nelson competed in the regional hairstyling intermediate competition, where they created a “special occasion updo.”

They were allotted 1.5 hours to complete their design in each competition.

Regional technical committees made up of educators and industry experts hosted the competitions virtually from March 2-18.

This year due to COVID-19 in-persons competitions were ruled out so they were held virtually.

Students competed from the safety of their own school’s shops, classes and labs.

Students from across Alberta came together at the same time to live-stream the competition. Pictures were then submitted after the event.

Top performers in each region will progress on to the virtual Provincial Skills Canada Competition on April 14-23.

An awards ceremony for all regions will be live-streamed on March 25 at 6:30 p.m.
