Film crew picks Fort Macleod as location

Scenes from another big budget production will be filmed in Fort Macleod this fall.

Town of Fort Macleod chief administrative officer Sue Keenan said last week the production will be on the same scale as Ghostbusters 2020: Afterlife that was filmed here in 2018.

“I’m very excited about that. I think it will bring some welcome, positive energy back to the Town of Fort Macleod in what has been a very tough 1 1/2-year struggle for everybody,” Keenan said.

HBO is to start filming the new TV series The Last of Us in Calgary and area July 5, with filming continuing until June 2022.

Based on a popular video game, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic world about 20 years after civilization has ceased to exist.

Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal is to play Joel, a survivor hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, who is also from Game of Thrones, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

Filming in Fort Macleod is expected to take place over one week in the historic downtown core, and over an additional week on the outskirts of town.

Town of Fort Macleod staff will meet with HBO representatives in the next two weeks to finalize a contract.

“I will be meeting with the Chamber to give them more details as we have them,” Keenan said. “The business community will know the details within a very short period of time.”

The location manager will meet with all businesses on Main Street, Keenan added, to negotiate any deals.

“Communication is going to be of the utmost concern and we’ve already got that commitment from the HBO staff,” Keenan said.

Keenan also noted Sony Canada has indicated the release of Ghostbusters 2020: Afterlife is scheduled for November.

“We are still on the radar for a special screening,” Keenan said.

An event is still planned around the screening of the movie at the Empress Theatre.

Any money raised from that gala event will go to the Empress Theatre for new floors and chairs.
