Fort Macleod to host Ghostbusters premiere

The Ecto-1 raced up and down Main Street Fort Macleod during the filming of scenes from the movie ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’

Fort Macleod will roll out the red carpet Wednesday, Nov. 10 for the premiere of the Hollywood blockbuster Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Scenes from the movie were filmed on Second Avenue and Main Street during the summer of 2019.

The event postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic is a fund-raiser for the Empress Theatre.

Sony allowed one screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in Fort Macleod on Nov. 10.

However, following the world premieres of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in New York and Los Angeles, the Empress Theatre will be permitted to screen the movie for the next two weeks.

“This had to go all the way to the top,” chief administrative officer Sue Keenan said. “It went to Sony Canada and then to Sony Hollywood.”

“We’re very fortunate to have sony Canada working on our behalf, and we’re very fortunate to have this one screening.”

The estimated $26,000 profit will go toward the $1-million upgrading of the Empress Theatre floor and refurbishment of the seats.

The Empress Theatre Society will receive $80 from every $100 ticket sold for the gala event, with the remaining $20 going to cover costs of the fund-raiser.

The $100 tickets provide entrance to a VIP tent from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Main Street, where hors d’oeuvres and a signature cocktail will be served.

VIPs will walk a red carpet in true Hollywood style.

An outdoor street festival gets under way at 6:30 p.m. with photo opportunities, fire pits, costume contests, music, displays from Ghostbuster fan clubs and more.

The public will have photo opportunities with iconic Ghostbuster characters and props.

When screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife begins at 8 p.m., an outdoor area will be open to the public.

Free hot chocolate with marshmallows will be served and people can make smores over the open fires.

The organizing committee will meet every two weeks until the event.

Tickets for the special premiere will go on sale during the second week of September through the Empress Theatre box office.
