Schedule set for TV series filming in Fort Macleod

Cameras will roll next month in Fort Macleod for the filming of the premier episode of a new HBO series.

Crews from The Last of Us will be in town for most of July to film scenes in Fort Macleod’s historic downtown core.

“It is a big production,” Town of Fort Macleod chief administrative officer Sue Keenan said. “As big as Ghostbusters was in terms of the requirements and what they need.”

Keenan provided council with the filming schedule and other details during its June 14 meeting at the G.R. Davis Administration Building.

Based on a popular video game, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic world about 20 years after civilization has ceased to exist.

Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal is to play Joel, a survivor hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, who is also from Game of Thrones, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

Filming of The Last of Us in Alberta is expected to take place over about a year.

Keenan cautioned council that as Fort Macleod has learned from other productions, filming schedules are subject to change on short notice.

“The critical point is flexibility.” Keenan said. “I know that’s tough sometimes with the business community but we have been giving them as much lead time and information as we can on the road closures.”

The company was in Fort Macleod on Friday to do a technical survey of Main Street, which was closed for about four hours.

“The production company has been terrific in polling businesses and residents,” Keenan added. “Main Street is the only area impacted beside Second and Third avenues.”

According to a tentative schedule, crews will begin preparations on the weeks of July 5 and July 12, with filming to take place from July 19-24.

“As council knows, filming is always fluid and in motion,” Keenan said of the possibility of the schedule changing.

The production company has consulted with Fort Macleod Fire Chief Allen Zoeteman, as well as representatives of Fortis Alberta, Shaw and other companies.

The Town of Fort Macleod has issued a permit to allow filming to take place.

Scenes from Ghostbusters: Afterlife were filmed on Fort Macleod’s Main Street in 2019.
