South Country Fair cancelled for second year

South Country Fair presents The Myrtle Sisters in a virtual concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24.

South Country Fair is cancelled for the second year in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizers announced last week the popular music festival will not take place in July.

“This is very difficult for us for at least a couple of reasons,” fair organizers said in a news release. “First being we love what we do, which is bringing people together to enjoy time in the great outdoors, while basking in fantastic roots and folk-rooted music.”

“Second is how much we like to hug each other, and we can’t. Pandemic restrictions and graduated opening stages aside, fact is we will not risk becoming a super-spreader event and we are not willing to put the health and safety of our community in jeopardy.”

South Country Fair has traditionally attracted 2,500 to 3,000 people to Fort Macleod Fish and Game Park over three days in July.

There is music on two stages, children’s entertainment, health and wellness sessions, song-writing workshops and a merchant’s mall.

Although South Country Fair won’t go ahead this year, organizers are planning some summer entertainment.

“What that summer something will look like exactly is still on the drawing board,” organizers said.

To provide some entertainment this fall, organizers are hosting a series of virtual performances in the Dogstar Sessions.

Last weekend, Wendy McNeill and the Mayhemmingways performed in a Saturday virtual concert. On Sunday, Insomniacs Yoga took center stage.
