Sydney Tobler steps into new role with Chamber

Sydney Tobler is the new administrative assistant for the Fort Macleod and District Chamber of Commerce.

Sydney Tobler is settling into her new role as administrative assistant for the Fort Macleod and District Chamber of Commerce.

Tobler took over for Ashley Nelson, who resigned to take on a new professional challenge after being in the role since the fall of 2017.

“I hope to support our businesses and to have a better understanding of what our businesses stand for and value,” Tobler said. “I also hope to contribute to the Chamber’s overall success.”

Nelson is leaving her post as the Chamber’s executive director to work at her husband Brian’s company, Avail CPA.

Nelson was thankful for the opportunity to work with the Chamber and to develop strong relationships with many business owners.

“I value the Chamber and all it does for our business community,” Nelson said as she left the position. “I’ve really appreciated the experiences I’ve gained here.”

Nelson will remain in her role as Santa Claus Parade co-ordinator.

Tobler became interested in working for the Chamber after a friend reached out to say she would be a good fit for the position.

Tobler reviewed the job requirements for the administrative assistant position and that piqued her interest further.

“What really caught my attention was how involved I would be with the community,” Tobler said. “The job also provides some flexibility with my work days. Nothing is more important to me than my children and husband, so taking on a job is a very big decision.”

After considering the pros and cons, and explaining to the Chamber executive her family commitments, Tobler agreed to take on the job.

“I have massive shoes to fill coming into this position after Ashley, but with time and patience I do believe I will be able to fill this role and meet our community’s needs,” Tobler said. “I do have strong organizational skills and I am able to look at things or situations with a new perspective. I guess you could say I think outside the box.”

Tobler spent eight years working at Fort Macleod Extendicare, where she developed strong relationships with residents and staff.

“I absolutely loved my job. I loved the residents and loved who I worked with. The staff there is beyond the most kind-hearted and giving people you would ever meet. They truly care about each and every resident. Working in recreation was truly my dream job and it fulfilled me every day. I am so grateful I was able to get to know so many amazing individuals.”

After Tobler left to care for her young and growing family, she volunteered for three years as activity co-ordinator for her church, leading a committee of six to seven people.

The committee hosted regular dinners for about 120 church women, and organized monthly activities with different themes for groups of 50 women.

“I really enjoyed this role and building relationships with people.”

Tobler also volunteered with the Empress Theatre Society to assist Dona Guyette in planning the Diamond Dinner fund-raiser.

Tobler is optimistic those experiences will serve her well as Chamber administrative assistant.

“When it comes to events, I feel this is my strongest suit. I am able to take what someone gives me and I am able to execute it beautifully.”

Tobler has spent her time in her new job getting to know Chamber members and some businesses while learning new skills and what is expected of her.

Planning the annual antique sale and show set for June 18-19 is an immediate priority for the Chamber of Commerce.

“As most of you know Ashley is such a ray of sunshine and such a sweetheart,” Tobler said. “She definitely left the Chamber in great shape. As I said before, I have massive shoes to fill.”
