Alumni invitational basketball tournament tips off Friday

A new invitational alumni basketball tournament tips off Friday, June 24 at F.P. Walshe school in Fort Macleod.

The tournament is a fund-raiser for local high school basketball programs.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place as well as the consolation winner. That money is to go directly to the home town high school basketball programs.

Organizers Jordan Gunderson, Anthony Burdett and Morgan Gunderson conceived the idea of the F.P. Walshe Alumni Basketball Tournament.

Teams will represent Stirling, Picture Butte, Coaldale Kate Andrews, Vulcan County Central, Claresholm Willow Creek Composite, and Winston Churchill and Immanuel Christian in Lethbridge.

The tournament tips off at 4 p.m. Friday, June 24 with Picture Butte Sugar Kings taking on County Central Hawks from Vulcan.

Immanuel Christian Eagles play Willow Creek Composite Cobras from Claresholm at 5:15 on Friday.

Next up at 6:45 p.m. is Kate Andrews Pride battling Stirling Lakers.

The final game on Friday gets under way at 8 p.m. with host F.P. Walshe Flyers playing Winston Churchill Bulldogs.

Play resumes Saturday, June 25 with consolation side semifinal games set for 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., and A side semifinal games at 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

The “Prairie Pride” game is at 2:30 p.m., followed by the consolation final at 3:45 p.m.

The playoff to decide third place is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game tipping off at 6:45 p.m.

Fans have the chance to win prizes in contests at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 12:45 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday.
