You don’t have to look far to find some fun on Canada Day in Fort Macleod and District.
A pancake breakfast, the Musical Ride, High Tea, a barn dance, parade and fireworks are just some of the highlights on Friday, July 1.
Lions pancake breakfast
Fort Macleod Lions Club get the day started with a free pancake breakfast from 9-11 a.m. at Lioness Park.
In lieu of an admission fee, the Lions will accept donations for the Fort Macleod Food Bank.
Fort Museum
The Fort Museum will host its annual Canada Day celebration, which runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.
Admission is free, with donations accepted.
Opening ceremonies get under way at 11 a.m., followed by the inspection of the Fort Museum’s own mounted patrol and the debut Musical Ride of the 2022 season at 11:30 a.m.
The Mounted Patrol, dressed in replica uniforms, performs precision routines to music to celebrate the history of the Mounted Police’s famed Musical Ride.
The Musical Ride will also be performed at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The Southern Alberta Horse Artillery returns to the Fort Museum’s compound for more demonstrations of cannon and rifle fire.
The South Alberta Horse Artillery is based on the Royal Canadian Artillery that came west in 1885 to quell the Riel Rebellion.
Cannon and rifle demonstrations are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the compound.
The Fort Museum has a barbecue planned along with Canada Day birthday cake served following the first Musical Ride.
There will be games and crafts at the Fort Museum, along with a watermelon-eating contest at 4:30 p.m.
Granum Canada Day
A full slate of activity beginning at 12 noon Friday is planned at Granum.
The Granum Museum and Old Jail will be open from 12 noon to 6 p.m.
Children’s activities sponsored by the Granum and District Recreational Society take place from 2-4 p.m.
There will be a Royal Heritage display at the Recreation Centre from 2-4 p.m.
The display was sponsored by Heritage Canada and was organized to mark the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth.
Jason Circus will entertain from 3-3:45 p.m. at the Homesteader in a performance sponsored by Family and Community Support Services.
The Remington Carriage Museum will have representatives on hand to offer carriage ridges from 3-6 p.m.
High Tea will be served at 4 p.m. at the Country Stop.
The Canada Day cake ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. at the Homesteader, followed by supper.
The annual Canada Day parade gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
The Canada Day celebration ends at dusk with a fireworks display sponsored by the Fleming family, Terry and Joyce Levair and the Town of Fort Macleod.
The fireworks finale is sponsored by Scougall Motors.
Windy Rafters Barn Dance
Windy Rafters Barn Dance is hosting a Canada Day roast beef dinner and dance beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
For those only interested in the dance, it gets under way at 7 p.m.
