Co-ed volleyball league holds preseason tournament

MIKE BOURASSA – GAZETTE CONTRIBUTOR

The Fort Macleod Volleyball Club began the 2022-’23 season in mid October after a two-year forced break due to COVID-19.

This year the league has 15 teams. It is nice to see the league return strong with so much interest in the sport.

The club welcomed back many returning players and a great number of new players to the league. It is especially nice to see the increase in younger players taking part. It shows that the interest is there for all ages and that bodes well for the league in future years.

This past weekend the league held its preseason tournament with 11 of the 15 teams taking part.

The competition and the matches were great and the good times even better.

After round-robin play on Friday night and Saturday morning and early afternoon the playoffs began at 2 p.m.

In one “A” Division semifinal it was the Brayden Van Driesten’s team taking on the Leanne Neels team. The Van Driesten team won in straight sets and advanced to the “A” final.

The other “A” Division semifinal saw the Jeff Perry team take on the Chelsie Wolff team. The Wolff team won in a dramatic three-set match to advance to the “A” final.

The A division final saw two teams that battled hard against each other but in the end the Van Driesten team defeated the Wolff team in straight sets.

On the “B” Division side it was the Sidney Orr team taking on the Nicki Conner team in one semifinal and the Mike Bourassa team take on the Sue Nordegraf team in the other. The Orr team and Bourassa teams advanced to the “B” Division final after two very close semifinal battles.

The Orr team defeated the Bourassa team to win the “B” Division.

Congratulations to the A and B division preseason tournament champions as well as all the other teams for their efforts.

The Fort Macleod Volleyball Club would like to thank Jordon Gunderson and Anthony Burdett for gathering and organizing the referees for the preseason tournament. The kids did a great job.

Thanks to all the volunteer scorekeepers for their efforts all weekend too. A big thank you also goes out to the players who helped set up the nets and poles to start the tournament and take down the nets and poles after the tournament was over. The help was much appreciated.

Last but certainly not least the club would like to thank the staff at W.A. Day school for working with us and allowing the Fort Macleod Volleyball Club to continue to use the gym at the school.
