F.P. Walshe Flyers win senior girls playoff title

F.P. Walshe Flyers are the Chinook Basketball League playoff champions.

The Flyers won three straight games in the two-day tournament at Pincher Creek to claim the championship.

Flyers 54 Hawks 36

The Flyers opened the tournament Friday afternoon with a 54-36 win over the host Matthew Halton Hawks.

The Flyers entered the tournament as the fourth seed, with the Hawks right behind at No. 5.

The Hawks stayed with the Flyers, trailing 22-19 at halftime, before F.P. Walshe pulled away in the second half.

Carson Smith scored 14 points for the Flyers, Alejandra Vega Solana had 12 and Sloane Grier had 10.

Josephina Weber had eight points for F.P. Walshe, Lalaine Mendoza had six and Tess Provost had four.

The win advanced the Flyers to the semifinals.

Flyers 42 Cobras 40

The Flyers came from behind Saturday morning to edge No. 1 seed Willow Creek Composite Cobras in the semifinals.

The Cobras jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter but the Flyers rallied to tie the game 22-22 at halftime.

Willow Creek pulled in front 30-28 in the third quarter but the Flyers battled to outscore the Cobras 14-10 in the fourth to win 42-40.

Josephina Weber was the game’s top scorer with 12 points for the Flyers.

Lalaine Mendoza had nine points, Sloane Grier had eight, Carson Smith had seven, Alejandra Vega Solana had four and Karli Coast had two.

The win sent the Flyers into the championship game against tournament NO. 2 seed St. Mike’s Dragons, who beat Coalhurst 50-28 in the other semifinal.

Flyers 60 Dragons 40

The Flyers took control of the championship game early Saturday afternoon and never let up as they slayed the Dragons 60-40.

The Flyers took a 12-2 lead to start the game and were in front 25-14 by the half.

Taking no chances, the Flyers poured it on in the third quarter to extend their lead to 46-23, and then cruised to victory in the fourth quarter.

Josephina Weber led the Flyers with 19 points, Karli Coast had 12 and Carson Smith had nine.

Alejandra Vega Solana, Sloane Grier and Lalaine Mendoza each had six points and Tess Provost had two.
