F.P. Walshe Flyer Carson Smith was named most valuable player in the Chinook Basketball League.
Flyers coach Amiee Sandham said Smith brings a positive attitude to practices and games, and is welcoming of other players.
“She has an amazing work ethic,” Sandham said of Smith, who is in Grade 12. “She is very athletic and pushes and challenges herself.”
Sandham said Smith’s versatility and agility make her stand out, along with a “beautiful” shot and good range at the three-point line.
“She also has a good drive to the hoop and post moves,” Sandham added.
Another Flyer, Josephina Weber, was named a second team all-star last week when Chinook announced its year-end awards.
On the senior varsity boys’ side, Sandro Brussee of the Flyers was named a second team all-star.
The Chinook league’s first team all-stars were Noa Jessen and Abi Whitehead of Matthew Halton Hawks, Mackenzie Jones of Willow Creek Composite Cobras, and Raegan Nicol and Sam Walker of Coalhurst Crusaders.
Second team all-stars were Emma Walker of Coalhurst Crusaders, Josephina Weber of F.P. Walshe Flyers, Sofia Citrigno and Jacey McRae of St. Mike’s Dragons and Lydianna O’Neil of Willow Creek Composite Cobras.
The league’s sportsmanship award went to Matthew Halton Hawks.
Willow Creek Composite Cobras won the regular season championship and F.P. Walshe Flyers were the playoff champions.
The league held its all-star games on Wednesday at County Central high school in Vulcan.
In the girls’ game, Team Light downed Team Dark 84-74, with Smith and Weber playing on the losing side.
Smith scored 11 points for Team Dark and Weber had eight.
Lydianna O’Neil of Willow Creek Composite Cobras was top scorer for Team Dark with 20 points.
Abi Whitehead of Matthew Halton Hawks led Team Light with 19 points and Raegan Nicol of Coalhurst Crusaders had 17.
In the Chinook boys league, Ronan Gelber of Livingstone Sabres was named most valuable player.
First team all-stars were Hayden Many Grey Horses of St. Mike’s Dragons, Franklin Crazy Bull and Jacob Black Water of Kainai Warriors, Eli Roth of Coalhurst Trojans, and Asher Warkentin of Matthew Halton Hawks.
Second team all-stars were Sandro Brussee of F.P. Walshe Flyers, Ryan Smyth of Livingstone Sabres, Jude Black Water of Kainai Warriors, Kaiden Fulton of County Central Hawks, and Charles Misa of St. Mike’s Dragons.
Livingstone Sabres were chosen for the league’s sportsmanship award.
Kainai Warriors were both the regular season and playoff champions.
In the boys’ all-star game, Tristan Luther and Kody Welsh, representing F.P. Walshe, helped lead Team Dark to an 89-83 win over Team Light.
Eli Roth of Coalhurst Trojans led Team Dark with 26 points. Hayden Many Grey Horses of St. Mike’s Dragons replied with 16 for Team Light.
