Flyers rise to third in annual Blue and White

F.P. Walshe Flyers had reason to celebrate Saturday night as they battled to third place in their own Blue and White tournament.

The Flyers won two of their three games in the senior boys basketball tournament, in which St. Mike’s Dragons beat Coalhurst Trojans in the final.

F.P. Walshe tipped off against Noble Central Blades on Friday night in their first game in the eight-team tournament.

The Flyers were never threatened by the Blades as they rolled to an 89-42 win.

F.P. Walshe led 23-11 after the first quarter and stretched their lead to 49-21 by halftime.

Nobleford had no answers in the second half as the Flyers led 67-26 after three quarters before winning 89-42.

Tristan Luther was top scorer for the Flyers with 22 points.

Jon Arron Lopez and Sam Meech each had 15 points for F.P. Walshe and Sandro Brussee had 13.

Ben Oosterwijk scored seven for the Flyers, Mathias Rippin had six, Brayden Weasel Fat had four, Joeper Paguio had three and Jared Gurney and Kody Welsh had two apiece.

Dragons 96 Flyers 55

The Flyers had the tables turned on them Saturday afternoon in the semifinals as they fell 96-55 to eventual tournament champion St. Mike’s Dragons.

The Dragons built a 49-27 halftime lead on their way to the win.

Oosterwijk scored 12 points for the Flyers, Sandro Brussee had 11 and Luther had nine.

John Masocol scored eight, Rippin had six, Welsh had five and Lopez, Gurney and Weasel Fat each had two.

Kayden Many Grey Horses of the Dragons led all scorers with 30 points. Ethan Apostal had 17 and Charles Misa had 14.

Flyers 82 Hawks 64

The loss sent the Flyers to the third-place game Saturday night where they defeated Matthew Halton Hawks 82-64.

Matthew Halton jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the opening quarter but the Flyers fought back to trail 31-26 at halftime.

The Flyers continued to come on strong in the third quarter, scoring 36 points to lead 62-48.

F.P. Walshe continued its strong play in the fourth quarter, rolling to an 82-64 win.

Sandro Brussee scored 27 points and Tristan Luther had 26 to lead all scorers.

Oosterwijk scored 10, Weasel Fat had nine, Welsh had six, and Paguio and Meech each had two.

Asher Warkentin was top scorer for the Hawks with 14 and Nathan Tanner had 13.
