Flyers second in Blue and White tournament

Kate Andrews Pride went undefeated to win the annual Blue and White senior high girls basketball tournament at F.P. Walshe school.

The Pride defeated the host Flyers in the championship game Saturday night.

Also competing in the two-day tournament were St. Mike’s Dragons and Matthew Halton Hawks from Pincher Creek, Willow Creek Composite Cobras from Claresholm, Taber St. Mary’s, Winston Churchill JV Griffins, and Vauxhall Vi-Queens.

Flyers 37 Griffins 25

The Griffins led 11-9 after the first quarter but pulled ahead 18-10 early in the second before the Flyers fought back to tie the game 18-18 at halftime.

After a slow start the F.P. Walshe Flyers rallied to beat Winston Churchill Griffins 37-25 in their opening round game Friday night.

The Flyers outscored the Griffins 13-1 in the third quarter and played them even in the fourth to record the 37-25 win.

Carson Smith scored nine points for F.P. Walshe and Cheyenne George and Sloane Grier each had eight.

Josephina Weber had seven points for the Flyers and Alejandra Vega Solana, Tess Provost and Karli Coast each had two.

In other first round action it was Kate Andrews 62, St. Mike’s 48; Willow Creek Composite 49, St. Mary’s 45; and Vauxhall 62, Matthew Halton 30.

The victory propelled the Flyers into the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Flyers 41 Queens 29

The Flyers led all the way in the semifinal match as they beat Vauxhall Vi-Queens 41-29.

F.P. Walshe jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the opening quarter and were ahead 19-12 by the half.

The Flyers opened more ground in the third quarter to lead 30-17 before putting the game away in the fourth.

Lalaine Mendoza led F.P. Walshe with 10 points and Carson Smith had nine.

Cheyenne George had seven, Josephina Weber had five, Alejandra Vega Solana had four and Tess Provost, Karli Coast and Sloane Grier had two apiece.

That victory sent the Flyers into the championship match on Saturday night against Kate Andrews, who beat Willow Creek Composite in the other semifinal.

The score sheet from the championship game was not available.
