Flyers win Cobra Classic

F.P. Walshe Flyers won three straight games to claim the championship of the weekend Cobra Classic high school girls basketball tournament in Claresholm.

The Flyers beat Matthew Halton Hawks on Friday and then knocked off Cardston JV Cougars and the host Willow Creek Composite Cobras on Saturday to claim the championship.

Flyers 59 Hawks 47

A big third quarter powered the Flyers to a 59-47 win Friday over Matthew Halton in the opening game of the tournament.

Leading 24-14 at halftime the Flyers exploded for 21 points in the third quarter to open an insurmountable 45-25 lead.

The Hawks made up some ground in the fourth bu the Flyers went on to win 59-47.

Josephina Weber led the Flyers with 20 points and Carson Smith had 18.

Alejandra Vega Solana had 14 points, Lalaine Mendoza had four, Cheyenne George had two and Sloane Grier had one.

Noa Jessen of the Hawks was the game’s top scorer with 27.

The win sent the Flyers to the semifinals on Saturday against the Cardston JV Cougars.

Flyers 47 Cougars 36

The Flyers had to come from behind Saturday against Cardston JV Cougars to win their semifinal match 47-36 and advance to the final.

Cardston led 13-8 after the first quarter and 27-20 at halftime.

The Flyers tightened their defence in the second half, holding the Cougars to seven points in the third quarter and just two in the fourth.

Carson Smith led the Flyers scoring with 20 points and Josephina Weber had 12.

Alejandra Vega Solana had six points, Lalaine Mendoza had five and Cheyenne George and Karli Coast each had two.

Kaylen McCarthy was top scorer for Cardston with 11.

Flyers 56 Cobras 45

Josephina Weber had one of her most productive games of the year Saturday night, pouring in 27 points to lead the Flyers to a 56-45 win over the Cobras in the championship game.

The Flyers led all the way, opening a 15-5 lead in the first quarter, stretching it to 28-14 by halftime and 37-25 after three quarters.

Lalaine Mendoza had eight points for F.P. Walshe, Alejandra Vega Solana and Carson Smith each had six, Tess Provost and Sloane Grier had four apiece and Karli Coast had one.

Anastasia Skelliter led the Cobras with 14 points and Amy Froese had 12.
