Fort Macleod Mavericks reached the semifinals of their own U18 hockey tournament before bowing out.
The Mavericks won two of three round-robin games before losing to eventual tournament champion Airdrie Lightning in the semifinals.
Airdrie went on to beat Invermere Rockies 5-2 in the championship game Sunday.
Mavericks 6 Rockies 4
The Mavericks opened the tournament Friday afternoon with a hard-fought 6-4 win over Invermere Rockies.
The Maverick jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and held a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes.
Invermere narrowed the gap to 4-3 five minutes into the third, but the Mavericks restored their two-goal lead just over three minutes later.
The Rockies scored with five minutes to play to make it 5-4 but the Mavericks got one more with a minute to play to win 6-4.
Race Jenkins led the Fort Macleod attack with two goals and two assists and Ryan Burrows also scored twice.
Jack Grier had a goal and two assists, Rylan Carter had the other Fort Macleod goal and Danton North Peigan had an assist.
Carter Henderson handled the goaltending duties for Fort Macleod throughout the tournament.
Mavericks 7 Renegades 5
Jack Grier’s second goal of the game with four minutes to play proved to be the winner Saturday as the Mavericks edged RMAA Renegades 7-5.
Fort Macleod took a 2-0 lead int he first period and held a 4-3 advantage at the end of the second.
The Renegades kept pace with the Mavericks in the third period and tied the game with 9:33 to play.
That set the stage for Grier to net the winner and Torrin Tailfeathers to add an insurance goal.
Race Jenkins had two goals and an assist for the Mavericks and Ryan Burrows had a goal and two helpers.
Treycen Peace Maker had two assists on Fort Macleod goals and Danton North Peigan, Marshall Tailfeathers, Hayden Archibald and Alex Eagle Bear each had one.
Bruins 5 Mavericks 3
Bow River Bruins scored two unanswered third period goals Sunday to edge the Mavericks 5-3.
The Mavericks scored the only goal of the first period but the Bruins fought back to tie it 3-3 in the second period.
Race Jenkins scored two goals and assisted on another for the Mavericks and Jack Grier had a single.
Ryan Burrows had two assists.
Lightning 9 Mavericks 1
Airdrie went undefeated in round-robin to place first in their pool and crossed over to meet the Maverick, who were second in their pool, in the semifinals.
Airdrie went up 3-0 in the first period and held that lead into the second period before Race Jenkins got Fort Macleod’s only goal, unassisted.
The Lightning scored five straight goals to end the second period lead 8-1, and added one more in the third.
