Hockey Through the Ages tournament shaping up

Hockey players, including one from Dallas, Texas, are signing up quickly for the chance to lace up the blades next month in Fort Macleod’s alumni tournament.

Carey Archibald of Dallas and 94 other people have registered for the third Hockey Through the Ages tournament set for Feb. 11-13.

In addition to filling the remaining few roster spots, organizers are recruiting volunteers for a variety of jobs.

Financial contributions or donations of silent auction items for the charity tournament are also welcome.

The tournament in its first two years raised about $100,000, which organizers donated to community groups, including palliative care at Fort Macleod Health Centre.

“We have two or three places we have discussed donating money to but we have not made an official decision,” Scott Norlin of the organizing committee said of the recipient of any proceeds from this year’s tournament.

The first Hockey Through the Ages tournament was held in 2017 and the second one followed in 2018.

The third tournament was originally planned for December 2020 but has been postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prospective players are encouraged to get their registration in soon, with team captains preparing to form the teams of 13 skaters and one goalie.

Participation in the Hockey Through the Ages tournament is limited to people aged 25 years and over who either played Minor Hockey or lived in Fort Macleod.

Players who are first to pay the $150 registration fee are “drafted” onto one of eight teams made up of 13 skaters and one goalie.

Each team is guaranteed four games, including one in a playoff contest.

In addition to the hockey, there is a cabaret on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Fort Macleod and District Community Hall, where a silent auction is held to aid fund-raising.

In each of its first two years the tournament attracted a full complement of players.

An unexpected but welcome sideline were the huge crowds of parents and other family members and friends who turned out to support the tournament.

The organizing committee includes Rob Luther, Scott Norlin, Mike Bourassa, Ben Paskal, Wes Stockton, Gage DeGinnus, Cole Archibald and Stephen Vandervalk.

Contact any of the captains to register as a player, volunteer or make a silent auction or cash donation.
