Drag Out the Love returns to Empress Theatre stage

Thirteen artists from across Alberta take the Empress Theatre stage Saturday, Aug. 26 for the annual Drag Out the Love show.

This year’s theme “Drag Out The Love: Not Guilty” is a direct response to the harmful anti-trans, anti-2SLGBTQ+ and anti-drag legislation that has surfaced across Canada and the U.S.

“Our identities and art are not illegal and Drag Out The Love exists to amplify 2SLGBTQ+ voices, showcase queer art, and promote empathy and understanding in our community,” organizer Josh O’Sullivan said.

Drag Out the Love: Not Guilty gets under way at 8 p.m.

O’Sullivan explained that Drag is the art of gender performance.

Drag allows people to express themselves anywhere and everywhere along the gender spectrum — which does not only consist of male and female — while challenging gender stereotypes and expectations, and having fun with it.

Drag queens were and are at the forefront of the 2SLGBTQIA+ rights movement.

“The response over the past two years has been incredible,” O’Sullivan said. “Drag Out The Love was born with a mission to create a safe space for 2SLGBTQ+ folks and allies in Fort Macleod and beyond to come together in solidarity and celebration of Pride and the art of drag.”

“We never thought we would be selling out the Empress Theatre, but here we are today. We are so grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years, and we will continue to create opportunities for 2SLGBTQ+ voices to be heard, queer art to be seen, and spaces for the queer community and allies to gather and have a great time.”

Performers on Saturday night are Gemma Nye, Artasia, Audrina Linn, J. Elle, Karly Klimax, Moses Motors, Honey Nut Queerio, Richard Goblin, Devils Honey, Francheska Dynamites, Didi D’Edada, and hosts Isabeau Lyon and Brazen Mae.

“Drag is art, and Drag Out The Love showcases that art,” O’Sullivan said. “Just like a play, a musical, a TV show, or a concert, we are creating entertainment and using our platform to spread messages of love, inclusion, and understanding.”
