The F.P. Walshe Flyers run at the south zone basketball playoff tournament ended Wednesday at the hand of the Taber W.R. Myers Rebels.
The Rebels thumped the Flyers 79-28 in their second round game at Lethbridge College to eliminate F.P. Walshe from the nine-team high school girls’ tournament.
The Flyers are Azumi Mariquitas, Lalaine Mendoza, Emilia Iwen, Taylor Broderson, Tess Provost, Kappy Many Fingers, Maizie Meech, Jana Grau, Sloane Grier, Allisa Ross and Zoe Nelson.
Flyers 49 Hawks 24
Seeded No. 8 going into the tournament, the Flyers opened with a 49-24 win March 6 over County Central Hawks from Vulcan.
F.P. Walshe burst from the chute, running up a 16-1 lead in the first quarter as Lalaine Mendoza scored all 12 of her points.
By halftime, the Flyers were in front 36-6.
The Flyers called off the dogs in the second half but still rolled to a 49-24 win.
Lalaine Mendoza was top scorer for the Flyers with a dozen points and Taylor Broderson, Maizie Meech and Sloane Grier each had eight.
Jana Grau scored six, Zoe Nelson had three and Kappy Many Fingers and Allisa Ross each had two.
Hannah Smith was top scorer for the Hawks with seven points.
The win advanced the Flyers to the second round and a game Wednesday against No. 2-ranked W.R. Myers Rebels from Taber.
Rebels 79 Flyers 28
W.R. Myers led from the start, opening a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and increasing it to 38-18 by halftime.
The Rebels outscored the Flyers 24-6 in the third quarter and put the finishing touches on a 79-28 win by outscoring F.P. Walshe 17-4 in the final 10 minutes.
Tess Provost was top scorer for the Flyers with 16 points.
Taylor Broderson had four point, Kappy Many Fingers, Sloane Grier and Allisa Ross each had two and Emilia Iwen had one.
Natalee Porter scored 13 for W.R. Myers and Belinda Rios and Sadie Wright each had 12.
