F.P. Walshe Flyers mined bronze Saturday at the 2A south zone high school girls’ volleyball tournament.
The Flyers upset tournament host Willow Creek Composite Cobras in the bronze medal match.
The Flyers are Kacee Larson, Sierra Perry, Zeynep Turktas, Allisa Ross, Jamae Boot, Jessica Robertson, Maddie Meech, Maddy DeGinnus, Greta Jacob and Lexi Schaffer.
Flyers coach is Aidan Kidd.
The Flyers opened the three-day tournament in Pool A with Vauxhall Queens, Kate Andrews Pride and J.T. Foster Raiders.
Pool B was made up of the Immanuel Christian Eagles, Willow Creek Composite Cobras, Crowsnest Pass Pandas and Matthew Halton Hawks.
The Flyers opened the tournament on a winning note Thursday against J.T. Foster.
The Flyers won the first set 25-21 and completed a sweep with a 25-14 win in the second set.
The Flyers first match on Friday was a tough one as the Vauxhall Queens won both sets, 25-16 and 25-20.
F.P. Walshe went into the final match of round-robin needing to win in order to make the playoff round.
The Flyers took care of business as they beat Kate Andrews Pride 25-16 and 26-24 in a hard-fought battle.
Vauxhall placed first in Pool A, going undefeated to post a 6-0 record. The Flyers (4-2) were second, followed by J.T. Foster (1-5) and Kate Andrews (1-5).
Immanuel Christian topped Pool B with a 6-0 record, followed by Willow Creek (4-2), Crowsnest Pass 2-4) and Matthew Halton (0-6).
F.P. Walshe met Crowsnest Pass on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals, with the Flyers winning to advance.
In the semifinals on Saturday afternoon, the Flyers matched up against Immanuel Christian.
The Flyers battled hard but it was the Eagles soaring into the championship final as they beat F.P. Walshe 25-20 and 25-19.
The other semifinal saw Vauxhall battle Willow Creek, who had downed J.T. Foster in the other quarterfinal match.
Vauxhall won that match, sending the host Cobras into the bronze medal match against F.P. Walshe.
In the bronze medal playoff, the Flyers drew first blood with a 25-19 win over the Cobras.
The second set was a battle, with the Flyers emerging with a 25-21 victory to claim the bronze.
