Southwest United JVs earn rugby silver

Southwest United mined silver Friday at a junior varsity boys’ sevens rugby tournament at Vulcan.

United won three straight games before losing in the championship match.

United opened the tournament against Westmount Wolves from Strathmore. It was a tough match, with United pulling out a 20-14 victory. Syler Sabey scored two tries for United and Briggs Baker and Christian Possin each had one try.

In their next match, United took on another team from Strathmore. Led by Syler Sabey’s three tries and one convert, United pulled out a 22-10 win over the Cougars. Easton Wright had the other try for United.

The host County Central Hawks provided the opposition in United’s next match. The Hawks were no match as United rolled to a 36-5 win. Easton Wright had two tries and a convert for 12 points for United.

Christian Possin and Lander Hurst each had a convert and a try for United, and Eric Clarke and Dorian McDougall each had one try.

Southwest United met Westmount Wolves in a rematch in the gold medal game. This time the Wolves got some revenge against the shorthanded United, pulling out a 34-10 victory. Christian Possin and Lander Hurst scored tries for United.
