The Travelling Mabels make their way to Empress

The Travelling Mabels are on the road to the Empress Theatre, taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The Travelling Mabels are an award-winning folk and country quartet from southern Alberta that includes Keith Floen (piano), Lana Floen, Eva Levesque and Therry Lawson who each contribute vocals, guitar, bass and percussion.

For more than 15 years, the Mabels have brought their own unique brand of harmony, humour and musicianship to audiences from coast-to-coast, performing at venues ranging from folk clubs and community halls to big festivals.

The group was formed in 2008 with Eva Levesque’s daughter Suzanne, who is now one half of Over the Moon alongside her husband Craig Bignell, who played at the Empress earlier this year.

The Mabels have shared the stage with many notable artists including Ian Tyson, Tom Jackson, The Elvis Imperials and Gene Watson.

They have also collectively written and recorded four albums that have enjoyed extensive airplay on stations including CBC and CKUA.

Their most recent album, Take Me Home, features 11 songs, comprised of mostly original music, a Billy Joel instrumental cover and a remix of their most popular song Alberta Blue, which features a cameo vocal performance by Ian Tyson.

The album includes blues, rock and folksy tunes along with a bit of classic country.

“Any fan of Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton’s collaborations should enjoy this Alberta grown trio,” said Allison Brock of CKUA’s Wide Cut Country show.

The lyrics to Alberta Blue have been featured in children’s board book titled Alberta Blue — A Prairie Sky Lullaby, which won Children’s Book of the Year at the 2022 Alberta Book Publishing Awards.
