Douglas, Irene F.

Jan. 18, 1927 — June 24, 2024

Irene was born Jan. 18, 1927 in Fort Macleod. She was the third youngest child in a family of 10, born to Jim and Minnie Pinder.

Irene graduated from Fort Macleod high school and entered the nursing program at Calgary General Hospital and graduated as a registered nurse in 1949. She nursed in Calgary, Duncan, B.C. and Claresholm.

In 1953, Irene married a Cominco Mining engineer, Rod Douglas from Granum. Together they had three

children, Susan (Jim Monteith) of Fort Macleod; Stephen (Linda) of Trail, B.C.; and Catherine of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

These three children gave Irene and Rod eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The family moved every five years due to Rod’s work. Her travels took her from Kimberley, Trail, New Castle in New Brunswick, Salem in Missouri, back to Trail, to Yellowknife and finally to Tsawwassen where she resided until her passing.

Each move required a new school for the children. Irene would then find a new church where the family would meet fellow Christians, many becoming friends for life.

Irene was an active member of St. John’s Anglican church in Vancouver where she had many friends, young and old. Irene used her gift of hospitality and sharing, having been a dedicated and loyal volunteer at the Delta Hospice Society thrift store for many years.

Irene loved knitting and made more than a thousand toques for foreign sailors arriving in Vancouver. She also had a love for scrapbooking and flower pressing.

Irene had a deep personal faith in Jesus her Saviour, which helped her live her life with an attitude of gratitude.

Irene was thankful for the care and compassion she received from the staff at the Waterford Care Center.

She will be remembered as a caring and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

Funeral will be planned for a later date.
