Emilia Iwen named to all-star team; Flyers most sportsmanlike

Emelia Iwen is the F.P. Walshe Flyers representative on the Chinook Basketball League all-star teams.

A Grade 12 student, Emilia played three years s a point guard for the Flyers, developing as a player and as a person.

“She grew a ton in terms of confidence and as a person in those years,” Flyers coach Aimee Sandham said.

Sandham said Emilia was a fierce competitor on defence and drove the Flyers offence.

“She loves the game,” Sandham said.

The Chinook league also named the Flyers as the most sportsmanlike team in the 2023-’24 season.

The league named its all-stars and other award winners as the 2023-’24 season concluded.

J.T. Foster Raiders won both the regular season and senior varsity post-season championships.

Livingstone Sabres captured the junior varsity post-season title.

Gianna Gammie of Nanton’s J.T. Foster Raiders was named the girls’ league’s most valuable player.

First team all-stars were Ava Jessen of Livingstone Sabres, Emily Talbot of Coalhurst Crusaders, Faith Lundberg of J.T. Foster Raiders, Mackenzie Wells of Kainai Warriors, and Kate Zoratti of St. Mike’s Dragons.

Second team all-stars were Emelia Iwen of F.P. Walshe Flyers, Payton LaBrash of J.T. Foster Raiders, Kaydence Weasel Head of Kainai Warriors, Andrea Smyth and Aliyah MacGarva of Livingstone Sabres.

Chinook boys

The Chinook Basketball League also honoured its boys’ teams.

St. Mike’s Dragons won the regular season championship, as well as the junior varsity post-season tournament.

Coalhurst Trojans emerged as the post-season champions on the boys’ side.

Luca Citringno of St. Mike’s Dragons was named the league’s most valuable player.

First team all-stars were Nolan Grindle and Tyson Roth of Coalhurst Trojans, Vance Jackson of County Central Hawks, and Leland Gellrich of Noble Central Blades.

Second team all-stars were Jaxson Smith of Kainai Warriors, Owen Olsen of Livingstone Sabres, Johnny Bergen of Picture Butte Kings, and Kenai Warkentin and Blaze Wolsey of St. Mike’s Dragons.

Noble Central Blades received the league’s sportsmanship trophy.
