F.P. Walshe Flyers girls earn silver medals at zones

The F.P. Walshe Flyers battled to second place at the weekend 2A south zone high school girls volleyball playoffs.

The Flyers scrapped their way to the finals before losing to host Immanuel Christian Eagles.

The silver medal-winning Flyers are Raegan Gurney, London Wolstenholme, Maike Nigl, Maddy DeGinnus,  Lexi Schaffer, Denae Feyter, Rowan O’Connor, Maddie Meech, Angelina Morris, Avery Rippin, Jocelynn Foote and Zoe Nelson.

The Flyers started the tournament in Pool B with Willow Creek Composite Cobras from Claresholm and Matthew Halton Hawks from Pincher Creek.

The other pool featured Immanuel Christian Eagles, J.T. Foster Raiders from Nanton and Crowsnest Consolidated Pandas.

The Flyers took on the Cobras in the first match of round-robin on Friday afternoon.

F.P. Walshe swept Willow Creek Composite 25-21 and 25-12.

In their next match the Flyers stumbled against Matthew Halton Hawks, getting swept by the Pincher Creek team.

The Hawks eked out a 25-21 win in the first set and then fought off the Flyers to take the second set 25-23.

The Flyers, Hawks and Cobras tied in Pool B, each with two wins and two losses.

F.P. Walshe finished with a plus-11 point differential though to win the tie-breaker and get top spot.

Matthew Halton had a point differential of -1 while the Cobras were -11.

Immanuel Christian (4-1) topped Pool A, followed by J.T. Foster (2-2) and Crowsnest Pass (0-4).

Crowsnest and Matthew Halton met on Saturday morning with the Pandas winning to advance to a semifinal match against Immanuel Christian, who had a bye based on their first-place finish.

In the other quarterfinal J.T. Foster got by Willow Creek to advance to the semifinals to take on F.P. Walshe, who had enjoyed a first round bye.

Immanuel Christian beat Crowsnest Pass 25-6 and 25-12 to reach the gold medal game.

The Flyers, meanwhile, got by the Raiders 25-15 and 25-22 to punch their ticket to the final.

Immanuel Christian came out strong on Saturday night, beating F.P. Walshe 25-13 in the first set.

There was no quit in the Flyers, however, and they pushed the Eagles in the second set before falling 25-22.

Crowsnest Pass and J.T. Foster met in the bronze medal match on Saturday afternoon, with Crowsnest winning both sets 28-26 and 25-21.
