Shootout decides Hockey Through the Ages

Team Van Buuren edged Team Luther 5-4 in a shootout Sunday afternoon to win the championship of the Hockey Through the Ages alumni tournament. Team Van Buuren led the entire game but Team Luther scored in the dying moments to force the shootout. Team Van Buuren scored twice on three attempts in the shootout while Team Luther scored just once.

The tournament opened Friday at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre with the eight teams split into two pools. One pool was made up of Vandervalk, Van Buuren, Archibald and Norlin. The other pool included Paskal, Luther, DeGinnus and Rasmussen.

Van Buuren beat Vandervalk 6-5, Luther beat Paskal 7-3, Rasumussen edged DeGinnus 4-3 and Archibald doubled Norlin 4-2 as action got under way Friday. Van Buuren continued its winning ways on Saturday, knocking off Team Archibald 5-3 and Team Norlin 3-2.

Team Luther also won its two games Saturday, doubling DeGinnus 6-3 and downing Rasmussen 7-3 to finish in first place.

In other action Saturday, it was Rasmussen 7, Paskal 5; Norlin 5, Vandervalk 0; DeGinnus 6, Paskal 3; and Vandervalk 2, Archibald 1. Luther’s 3-0 record put it in first place in its pool, followed by Rasumussen (2-1), DeGinnus (1-2) and Paskal (0-3).

Van Buuren topped the other pool at 3-0, followed by Norlin (1-2), Archibald (1-2) and Vandervalk (1-2).

That set up the playoff round for Sunday, which began with Paskal beating Vandervalk 7-3 in the battle of the fourth-place teams from each pool.

In the playoff of third-place teams, DeGinnus downed Archibald 7-3. The second-place team playoff saw Norlin skate to a 7-1 win over Rasmussen. The two first-place teams met in the championship, with Van Buuren winning 5-4 over Luther.
