Eagle Butte Talons rally to beat F.P. Walshe Flyers

Eagle Butte Talons overcame a three-run deficit Wednesday to win the Southern Alberta High School Baseball League Tier 2 championship.

F.P. Walshe Flyers held a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning at Westwinds Stadium when the Talons exploded for five runs to take the lead for good on their way to a 22-6 win.

The two teams had each won twice at the playoff tournament in Medicine Hat the previous weekend.

When inclement weather rolled into the Gas City, the championship game was postponed until Wednesday in Fort Macleod.

Eagle Butte took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Flyers got two in the bottom of the inning when Riley Maljaars scored on a wild pitch and a Griffin Cook single scored Jasper Sharratt from third.

Eagle Butte regained the lead with two runs in the top of the second.

The Flyers tied the game in the bottom of the third when Nathan Coast hit a lead-off double and scored on an error.

The Flyers took a 4-3 lead when Ryder Neilson, who got on base with a double, scored on a long sacrifice fly by Lukah Day Chief.

After F.P. Walshe held Eagle Butte scoreless in the top of the fourth, Maljaars scored on a Coast double, and then Cook blasted a double to score Sharratt to make it 6-3 in the Flyers favour.

The game went south for the Flyers in the fifth inning when Eagle Butte exploded for five runs to go up 8-6.

The Talons held the Flyers scoreless in the fifth and brought home seven more runs in the top of the sixth inning to lead 15-6.

After again shutting out the Flyers in the bottom of the sixth, the Talons scored another seven in the top of the seventh to lead 22-6.

Day Chief walked to start the bottom of the seventh inning, but the next three Flyers went down in order to end the game.

Griffin Cook pitched 5 1/3 innings for F.P. Walshe, allowing 15 runs on 15 hits and three walks while striking out five batters.

Lukah Day Chief pitched in relief, allowing seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Ryder Neilson went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run and Jasper Sharratt went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

Riley Maljaars went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, Nathan Coast went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Haze Sharratt went 2-for-4.
