Fort Macleod’s Salvation Army Food Bank is getting some needed extra help this year.
Proceeds from the Tom Jackson “Singing For Supper” concerts at the Empress Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11-12 will go directly to the food bank.
“All proceeds go to the Fort Macleod Food Bank,” Salvation Army family services co-ordinator Debbie Bakker assured. “Whatever portion he provides here will stay here.”
The Salvation Army will be present at the concerts.
“We’ll be there with our van to take food donations as well as cash donations,” Bakker said. “All donations stay in Fort Macleod.”
The food bank will provide Christmas hampers to about 35 families this year, down a little from last year.
Bakker said that people who have not registered yet for a hamper don’t have to at this point.
They can just show up on distribution day Thursday, Dec. 23 at 2317 Third Ave.
“They will still have to provide proof of street address, proof of income, and ID for each person in the family,” Bakker said.
The hampers include a turkey with all the trimmings for families, or a ham for singles.
But the food bank still needs items to make up the hampers, including toys for children newborn to 17 years old, as well as foods.
“We’re in big need of things like pasta, pasta sauce, brown beans, peanut butter, cereal, things like that,” Bakker said.
“And people enjoy getting the extras, like hot chocolate, oranges, candy, and cookies.”
“Oh, and we need gloves and mitts,” Bakker added.
Donations for the food bank can be dropped off at the Salvation Army Thrift Store.
The Salvation Army will not have any kettles in Fort Macleod this year, but Bakker said a generous donation by one person has already exceeded what last year’s kettles brought in.
Bakker is thankful for the support the food bank has received, and spoke highly of the generosity of people in Fort Macleod and area.
“I want to say a big thank you to the community and district,” Bakker said. “Without their donations we wouldn’t be able to help people in need.”
