F.P. Walshe Flyers win junior high league, playoff titles

F.P. Walshe Flyers came home with two medals from a weekend junior high A boys basketball tournament in Claresholm.

The Flyers earned one medal as reward for a first-place finish in regular season standings.

The F.P. Walshe squad got the second medal after winning the playoff title Saturday afternoon at Willow Creek Composite.

The Flyers now have two weeks to prepare for the zone playoff tournament, which they will host.

Flyers 71 Cobras 53

Their first-place finish in regular season earned the Flyers a bye into the playoff tournament semifinals.

The host Cobras gave the Flyers all they could handle before F.P. Walshe pulled out a 71-53 victory.

F.P. Walshe led 20-17 after the first quarter before opening a 35-29 lead at halftime.

The Cobras continued to battle and by the end of the third quarter trailed the Flyers only 47-46.

The Flyers poured in 24 points in the final eight minutes while holding Willow Creek Composite to just seven to secure the 71-53 win.

Gabe Traspe had the hot hand for the Flyers as he scored 36 points.

Ryder Peterson had 10 points, Nathan Gurney and Taycen English each had eight, Roper Peterson had six, Nate Poytress had two and Dorian McDougall had one.

That victory sent the Flyers into the tournament championship Saturday afternoon, and a meeting with Livingstone Sabres.

Flyers 73 Sabres 54

The Flyers pressed the Sabres into submission in the championship, with F.P. Walshe recording a 73-54 win.

F.P. Walshe opened a 21-15 lead in the first quarter and were ahead 43-26 at halftime.

The Sabres narrowed the gap to 56-42 in the third quarter but the Flyers put it away in the fourth.

Gabe Traspe had 24 points for F.P. Walshe, Ryder Peterson had 15 and Roper Peterson had 14.

Taycen English had six points, Thatcher Gouchie and Nathan Gurney each had four and McKye Schaffer and Dorian McDougall each had two.
